Nyau Mask
"nkho komba" mask
Malawi
24 in.
wood, cloth

This festive mask is a mix of wood, fabric, hair and paint. It is used by the Malawi people to supervise young men during tribal initiations, and thus represents a unilateral belief of tribal elders as wise leaders. Some of the physical characteristics of the mask can be directly linked to aging individuals- extreme features, sunken eyes, and lack of teeth, but the image remains a positive one, guiding the inductees into their society with its strong, vibrant presence.
