Wood & Paint
The
flat patterning of this mask is part of the Mossi's
Islamic heritage. The combination of a convex, oval
face, triangular eyes and a notched ridge for a nose
are features inspired by the antelope. This totemic
animal serves as the emblem of the Wango Youth Society
that uses these masks at the burial of chiefs and elders.
