The
Mano tribe is divided into two powerful governing bodies:
the men's secret society of Poro (which means
'earth') and the women's secret society of Sande.
During their adult initiation ceremonies, residents
believe the mask's spirit (or the 'geh' ) and
not the mask wearer, performs the specific ritual function.
This female is decorated in elaborate metal and scarification
designs. Her hair is plaited in a style typical of Dan
women, and her rings of fat around her neck along with
her sagging breasts are a sign of great beauty in this
region.(50, Roy) The presence of jewelry also sets this
piece apart from other Mano statues with vibrant red
and white necklaces and bracelets to show her elevated
position in society.
