Ibo
Nigeria
36 in.
Wood
This
male wooden figure was probably carved for ancestors
(as is common for both sexes). Some statues represent
founders of the village and are kept in a central shrine;
The height of these statues can vary from one to five
feet tall. This male figure has his palms exposed and
possesses a strong, kinetic stance, which is typical
of statues from this region. The striking composition
of lines and shapes in his face is a nice contrast to
the simplicity of his corporal form. The scarification
exemplifies the Ibo style with its repetition of lines
which extend over the figure's forehead, and the helmet
adds the finishing touches to a poised warrior.
