Fang
Female Figure
Gabon
39 in.
Wood
"The
statue's origin is probably from the Okak subtribe of
Equatorial Guinea due to its characteristic posturing
of the arms. Her hair is designed in a typical Fang
coiffure painted crimson, orange and dark blue. It dates
from around 1925 and is not part of the famous bieri
artwork which uses abstract, wooden reliquary figures
to protect family relics from harm. On the contrary,
this statue stands independently of relics and was attentively
designed and carved. The two legs where made separately
probably as a result of the restrictions in the tree
trunk and the need to support its substantial weight."
