The
Bambara tribe is over two million strong to form the
largest ethnic group within Mali. Their artwork reflects
the dichotomy of political and religious beliefs. This
female's stance, with arms separated from the body,
is very typical of Mali artwork. Sometimes statues have
two horn-like braids that extend over their breasts.
Ancestor figures of the Bambara often share an artistic
tradition of rectangular shapes contrasted against flat
planes, this stylistic feature is also common in Dogon
sculpture. (Encyclopedia Britannica)
